BEST DAP

Astell&Kern SP4000 Review

"Astell&Kern keep on improving with each new model. Even when you think it can’t get any better they pull another trick out of their hat. With the SP4000 we now – again – have a gorgeous looking, well-designed and high-performing reference DAP that blows the competition away (for now).

The technical performance of the SP4000 is exemplary, and with the new architecture it’s no longer limited to IEMs only. The DAR function is also fully recommended.

Using the SP4000 is easy and straightforward. The DAP is super versatile and it has all the possible features you can think of and will ever need. On top of that the reference player now comes equipped with a full Android OS, opening up all of the Google Play Store possibilities.

The Astell&Kern SP4000 probably is the best DAP on the market right now from a technical point of view."

Best DAC/AMP – Portable

EarMen L-AMP Review

"EarMen up to now has designed and produced multiple excellent products, but for me the L-Amp is one of the highlights.

The L-Amp with the ESS DAC and JAN6418 Raytheon tubes is delivering pure enjoyment in a portable box. With the detail and energy of the DAC and the smoothness and silkiness of the tubes, the L-Amp quickly wins over your ears and heart.

All-in-all this is a superbly built, tube-based DAC/AMP, with an excellent price setting and a high versatility. Even if the L-Amp is not perfect, it is very easy for me to give it our Recommended Buy Award, especially for its headphone use."

Best DAC/AMP – Desktop

EarMen CH-Amp Signature Review

"The new EarMen CH-Amp Signature (with remote) still offers the same excellent build quality, now while integrating an internal DAC. Not only does the CH-Amp Signature now take up less space on your desktop, it also is strongly reduced in price from $1,480 USD to $949, making it a unit with exceptional value.

From a power perspective, the CH-Amp Signature easily manages to drive all types of headphones, and with its dedicated IEM mode it has you fully covered. From a sound perspective the CH-Amp Sig also impresses with a good technical level. From a tonality point of view, it does have its unique and specific characteristics, that you can bypass by hooking up an external DAC.

For the new price this now all-in-one DAC/AMP/PREAMP is going for, we can only recommend it looking at its performance and price/quality ratio."

Best Streamer

Eversolo T8 Review

"After having replaced the DMP-A6 with the Eversolo A8, it’s hard to go back to the A6 as a streamer only. The Eversolo T8 combines good build quality with qualitative components as well as a lovely design, rich feature set and an acceptable price.

If you don’t need this level of streamer or want to have a DAC included, I have no issues at all recommending the DMP-series. For me it is clear that the Eversolo T8 is here to stay in my setup(s), and without any (big) issues whatsoever, this also is a very easy Recommended Buy."

Best IEMs - Editor´s Choice

Kinera Thorking Review

"The Kinera ThorKing is a fantastic flagship IEM. It has one of the best technical performances for this price range. The treble is extraordinary, and if you like an airy, spacious sound, this is one of the IEMs you should check out. The impressive soundstage, imaging, lively timbre, and reference reproduction are other things that shine in this IEM."

Best TWS IEM

Noble Audio FoKus Rex5 Review

"Let me start by saying that these are the best TWS IEMs I’ve heard—ever. If it sounds like I’ve said this before with every Noble TWS release, it’s because I have. But that’s not on me. That’s on the rest of the industry doing nothing while Noble continues to dominate. If that bothers you, go e-mail your favorite audio company and tell them to step it up."

Best IEMs

Softears Volume S Review

"The Softears Volume S is one of my 2024 highlights, and I suspect it will enter FOTM status in 2025. And I pity the people who won’t buy it because of the FOTM stigma. I think Softears have achieved something special here, and the Volume S has quickly become my daily driver in lieu of much more costly options. Why? Not because of one exceptional quality but rather because of how well-rounded the whole offering is.

I will, without reservation, give the Softears Volume S the Headfonia “Highly Recommended” award and urge anyone to audition them in a store or an audio meetup. Hopefully, more manufacturers embrace the JM-1 tuning and think of other ways to put a unique spin on the sound signature. If so, we have an exciting year ahead of us!"

Best Desktop Amp - Tubes

Feliks Audio Echo Vibe Review

"On top of the superb sonic qualities, the Echo Vibe is pleasant to look at and evokes the woody design language of Feliks Audio’s flagship, the mighty Envy. If the listener feels like it has outgrown the sound qualities of the Echo Vibe, there are plenty of rolling options for the input tubes, and some more adventurous DIYers might be inclined to swap the output capacitors.

Just don’t get yourselves killed, no sound is worth that. At least nothing I’ve heard yet!"

Best Open-Back Headphones

HEDD Audio HEDDphone D1 Review

"HEDD’s first TPCD headphone effort is nothing short of a triumph. Eight years of TCPD research have resulted in one of the most natural, fatigue-free dynamic headphones on the market. It’s not flashy or “fun” in the traditional audiophile sense, but it’s musically complete.

The HEDD D1 is the kind of headphone that lets you rediscover your library—and perhaps even your patience. If you’re tired of bright planars and overcooked tunings, the D1 might just be your endgame for realism."

Best IEMs - Editor´s Choice

Volk Audio Étoile Review

"To give a product my Editor’s Choice award, it needs to absolutely rock my socks off, and rocking the socks off Étoile did.

The Étoile is getting my personal award for Best Product/Editor’s choice, because it was the biggest stand-out of the past twelve months for me personally. The Étoile has that wow-factor, with incredible performance across the board.

From bass, mids and treble to technicalities, everything is just beautiful and impressive. Top that off with stunning looks and a package worth its status and you have the Étoile. Jack Vang’s new brand certainly hit it out of the park with their very first product, and I am very much looking forward to find out what else he has up his sleeve.

I happily give my personal award to Volk Audio and Jack Vang for their Étoile. Well deserved."

Best DAP - Editor´s Choice

Lotoo PAW Gold Touch 2 Review

"Since reviewing the Lotoo PAW Gold Touch 2 back in March, it has risen to my very top spot as a Digital Audio Player.

Its snappy UI, extremely detailed and powerful sound, coupled with the raw power it delivers, makes the PGT2 my most cherished portable product.

Yes, it doesn’t stream, and yes, it is a big boy, but the sound it delivers with all my IEMs and Headphones is just gorgeous and has delivered endless hours of joy to me already. Best DAP of 2025, well deserved!"

Best Headphone - Editor´s Choice

HIFIMAN Arya Unveiled Review

"The Arya Unveiled is a mighty fantastic headphone. It delivers a spacious sound with astonishing vocals. Especially considering the moderate price of 1,449 USD, the Arya Unveiled is a very competent and affordable package!"

Best IEMs - Editor´s Choice

FIR Audio Project K Review

"I am a big fan of FIR Audio’s IEMs. The Project K, to me, is a complete package. Perfect build quality and a powerful, dense and emotionally grasping sound signature.

While 2,799 USD is by no means pocket-change, I am very thankful that FIR does not follow the latest trend of uber-expensive IEMs."

Best Headphone Amplifier - Editor´s Choice

LAiV Audio HP2A Review

"The LAiV HP2A cought me off-guard when I first hooked it up at home. It delivers an exciting sound, with great low end control and drive, superbly rendered mids and a delicate top end.

On top, it handles every headphone I throw at it – including the Susvara – with ease. And then, there’s the fact that I can also use it as a pre-amplifier in my stereo system. It is magnificient!"

Best Tube Headphone Amplifier - Editor´s Choice

Auris Audio Lyre Review

"The Lyre is one of those magic tube amplifiers that won’t let you go once you’ve listened to it. It has that lush and organic sound, which only tube amps can deliver.

Since reviewing the Auris Audio Lyre, it has brought me a lot of joy to listen to my favorite albums, when I want something soothing. Excellent!"

Best Streaming DAC - Editor´s Choice

Eversolo DMP-A10 Review

"This is the third consecutive year in which Eversolo gets an end of the year award from me. And well deserved it is. The DMP-A10 is a mighty Streaming DAC with excellent software (including Room Correction) and superb sound!"
