FINAL D8000 and FINAL D8000 Pro Edition

FINAL's open-design reference magnetostats are true masterpieces in precision housings made of an aluminum-magnesium alloy with a resonance-reducing coating.

The FINAL team has used a ground-up approach to think and come up with the ultimate magnetostat design. First, FINAL has chosen a round driver diaphragm that features an inwardly wound circular band of aluminum as the voice coil.

Secondly, in the D8000 models, these conductor tracks are not applied to the diaphragm with an adhesive (as in many other planar magnetic designs), but are etched as an ultra-thin aluminum coating into the surface of the foil diaphragm material.

This results in a moving mass that is one third lighter than comparable dynamic driver assemblies. And thirdly, the diaphragm has concentric corrugations that allow the diaphragm to move more linearly across its entire working surface.

By dispensing with the usual voice coil adhesives and a corrugated membrane, the D8000 drivers achieve an absolutely superior reproduction of even the most subtle high frequencies. Last but not least, the AFDS (Air Film Damping System) technology eliminates the deflection problems that usually occur with magnetostats by perfectly controlling the membrane movement even at high volumes using an air damping layer.

Voluminous and open basses

In conventional planar magnetic models, the amplitude increases in the low frequency range. Since the diaphragm comes into contact with magnets, the frequency of the bass had to be raised to a level that the driver unit can reproduce. To compensate for the lack of bass, the ear pads were tightly sealed inside and the front part of the diaphragm was designed as a closed space.

This is the same principle as earphones with sealed earpieces, which can reproduce bass frequencies despite their small size. By sealing the inner ear pads, it is possible to produce bass sounds over low frequency bands; these become the bass sounds produced in a sealed space, just like earphones.

In the D8000, the problem of the diaphragm coming into contact with the magnets has been solved by the AFDS (Air Film Damping System), and it has become possible to reduce the frequency of the bass,
that the driver unit can reproduce. In combination with breathable ear pads, bass reproduction with a volume

Subtle high frequenciesZen

When reproducing subtle high frequencies, the lightness of the diaphragm is crucial. Compared to other dynamic models of the same diameter, the D8000's diaphragm is one third lighter. Newly developed AFDS: Air Film Damping System

In conventional planar magnetic models, the amplitude became increasingly smaller in the lower range and the membrane came into contact with the magnets.To solve this problem, we performed measurements by performing membrane simulations using the finite element method and laser Doppler devices and developed a new membrane braking technology known as AFDS - Air Film Damping System.

In this way, the problem of low reproducibility of bass tones in planar magnet models was solved. This technology could be considered a reinvention of planar magnet models.

In the D8000, the problem of the diaphragm coming into contact with the magnets has been solved by the AFDS (Air Film Damping System), and it has become possible to reduce the frequency of the bass,  that the driver unit can reproduce. Combined with breathable ear pads, bass reproduction is possible with a volume and open sound that can only be achieved with superior dynamic models.


Designed for long life and easy repair

To allow for repairs and future upgrades, almost every part has been designed to be disassembled, allowing the product to be used for many years after purchase.


A housing made of an aluminum-magnesium alloy

To establish AFDS, an extremely high level of precision is required compared to conventional drivers. For this reason, the housing was manufactured from an aluminum-magnesium alloy with great precision.

By using a leather coating, as used on high-quality cameras, we have taken measures against even the smallest vibrations.


This model is manufactured in our own factory and stands for precision.

The D8000 model is manufactured at our headquarters in Kawasaki. In addition to the precision of the individual parts, the precision of the assembly process depends on the precision of the tools known as jigs and fixtures
that support the assembly process. In order to compensate for even the smallest irregularities in the precision of the devices during the assembly process, we design and manufacture production and measuring devices ourselves.

We have developed manufacturing equipment such as a membrane forming machine and a membrane tension measuring device in-house specifically for the D8000.

To make really good products, you have to get to the core of the manufacturing process of parts close to the raw material. The good thing about "Made in Japan" is that you can gain the cooperation of the manufacturers who are close to the material. By controlling everything together, from sourcing the raw materials to assembling the product, we have achieved high quality products.

Newly developed open ear pads

In closed and open headphones, the sealing of the ear pads provides a characteristic extension of the playback frequency to bass frequencies that the driver unit could not originally reproduce.

To ensure high-quality reproduction of the natural distribution of bass frequencies that the original sound originally has, it is necessary that the driver unit itself is capable of reproducing bass frequencies and that breathable ear pads are used that are not tightly sealed.

All conventional planar magnetic models and many dynamic models have a deficiency in terms of bass frequencies with ear pads,
that are not tightly sealed.

In the D8000, the bass frequency reproduction range has been expanded by AFDS, and it has become possible to adequately reproduce bass frequencies even with loose ear pads, simply by the ability of the driver unit. The ear pads, which have a major impact on sound quality, have been newly developed specifically for the D8000 using highly breathable foam and special fibers.
