Magna EVO I

The Magna EVO I is the latest next-generation ribbon headphone, representing a new level of performance not only compared to previous ribbon headphones but also to all other headphones. It is a true TOTL headphone.

The Magna is made of a fiberglass-aluminum composite material with a diameter of 10 cm, a hard-waxed veneer of American walnut wood, and an anodized surface, weighing 530 g.

The grille is made of etched 3-phase stainless steel, the bridge of titanium aluminum nitride and brushed stainless steel. The headband’s skin side is padded with suede, and the click-stop height adjuster has five steps on each side.

The ear pads are made of memory foam, lined on the inside with lambskin suede and on the outside with perforated leather. The round ear pad opening measures 64 mm. The input connectors are 3.5 mm TRRS jacks.

The twin ribbons are made of corrugated aluminum with a viscous damping membrane of "Silent Metal," the combined surface area is 16.8 cm².

The excursion potential is ±4 mm, the maximum sound pressure level is 115 dB, and the impedance is 0.038Ω (0.27Ω with the 1.8 m long S2 headphone cable with XLR4 connector).

The Sound of the Magna Evo I: An Evolution of the Segmented Driver

The Sound Profile (The Sound)

Deep bass & bass (Down at the bottom)

  • The Starting Point (Magna OG): Has a very tight and crisp upper bass. For many listeners, however, this bass was a bit too dry.

  • The Development: The crisp upper bass remains, but has been supplemented downward with real “oomph” (Oomph) and solid torque (Torque).

  • The Result: A wonderful foundation that seamlessly transitions into the upper bass and lower mids. The overall sound is noticeably warmer as a result.

Lower mids to mids (Low Mid - Mid)

  • The Starting Point (Magna OG): Was appreciated for its more intimate midrange compared to the richer Immanis.

  • The Development: The mids were further enhanced in the Magna Evo I, but in a new way.

  • The result: The playback is even more intimate, paired with a "larger" character in vocal voices, which better connect to the bass and lower mids.

Upper mids to lower treble

  • The further development: This range was subtly lowered—just enough so that the extreme "speed" of the ribbon drivers is not overemphasized.

  • The result: An overall warmer and smoother presentation. This especially benefits recordings mixed too bright or analytical DAC/amplifier chains.

  • The technology behind it: This was solved by the way this frequency range is guided to the concha (ear shell) and antihelix, as well as through targeted absorption to prevent reflective sound waves between the ear and the ribbon driver.

Technical implementation & driver architecture

The headphone uses two ribbon drivers per side, which specifically address different areas of the ear:

Driver position Target area in the ear Acoustic treatment & effect
Rear driver Directly above the concha (ear shell) Covered with open-cell rigid foam. Gently absorbs the upper mids and progressively dampens higher frequencies. Moderates the frequency response that radiates frontally into the concha.
Front driver Directly above the ear canal Completely open. Since this ear area naturally amplifies hardly any sound, the highs can flow in unhindered. The result is silky, even ribbon highs without unpleasant peak spikes.

Cable tuning (fine adjustment of the sound)

The upper mid and lower treble range reacts very sensitively to the cable used:

  • For warmth & creaminess: The standard included Satis Copper (1.8 m) delivers exactly this tuning in the upper mids.

  • For brilliance & "Diamond Dust": Those seeking the last bit of sparkle in the treble reach for the silver cables STAR-8 Silver or STAR-12.

The Origins

"This shows where the journey with segmented drivers is headed. The different acoustic treatment of various ear zones is the biggest change here. It is the natural evolution of the segmented driver concept that I have had in mind for a long time. This is my first draft with this approach. I hope you like it!" - Aleksandar, RAAL 1995

Amplification

Connection to amplifiers is via the RCD interface, equipped with specially designed high-quality toroidal transformers. The interface is styled like a headphone stand. Toroidal transformers convert a voltage-driven amplifier output into a current-driven signal to drive the ribbons.

Compatible amplifiers should have a low output impedance of less than 10mV DC offset and be suitable for driving loads of 32Ω or more. For the 300B type and other tube amplifiers designed for speakers, 8Ω or 16Ω versions are available on request (at no extra charge).

The single-impedance interface is designed to ensure compatibility with various Head-Fi amplifiers. Compared to older models, the Magna requires only 2.4 watts and the Immanis only 1.5 watts, enabling higher efficiency and greater compatibility.

Suitable amplifiers, such as the Auris Headonia 10th Anniversary 300B or the Trafomatic Primavera with SV811-10, provide the interface with full power. The 100% conductivity of the ribbons allows precise control over the entire diaphragm, resulting in fast response and impressive dynamics.

The Xmax value of ±4 mm for the Raal 1995 ribbons is exceptional for headphone drivers. The SPL capability of 115/118 dB for Magna/Immanis disproves the cliché of fragile ribbons and highlights the performance of these Serbian ribbon headphones, suitable for both consumer and professional applications.

The curated amplifiers, including the new Auris amplifier, provide the necessary power and interface compatibility.
