World premiere: 24Bit R-2R DAC in a USB DAC dongle
The RU6 is a scaled down implementation of the N6II - R01 Audio motherboard's R-2R resistor ladder network DAC. Never before has there been discrete R2R DAC technology in such a small space. When developing the RU6, Cayin put sound above everything else and took many risks:
"To be honest, R-2R is not a user-friendly technology for USB dongle applications. First of all, compared to other USB dongles, the size of the RU6 is up on the market: this is the minimum price when replacing a standard DAC chipset with 96 resistors. We also encountered a number of compatibility and operational issues later in the project. In the end, we settled on the best possible sound performance with some compromises in user experience. From a business perspective, this is a difficult decision because we know that convenience and user satisfaction are essential factors for mass-market electronic products. By prioritizing sound performance over ease of use, we will empower our users Limiting a niche group of customers, but our passion for quality audio performance has led us to go mad once again ke things to do."
Andy Kong, Cayin
Highlights
- First discrete 24Bit R-2R DAC in a USB DAC dongle, with 48 high-precision resistors per channel.
- Choice between NOS mode and oversampling mode
- Integrated high-precision volume control
- 3.5 mm unbalanced and 4.4 mm balanced jack output
Discrete 24-bit R-2R DAC explained
The basic idea of the R-2R contact ladder is a matched pair of two resistors, the first being "R" and the other being "2R" which is twice the value of R.
and 25x2R) for one channel, or 96pcs high-precision resistors for stereo.
R-2R is famous for its natural and realistic sound characteristics and offers music lovers a completely different experience for music lovers.
To achieve 24-bit R-2R decoding, Cayin looks for resistors that
deliver extreme precision and remain stable during temperature fluctuations.
